How to Turn a Reference Photo Into an Invitation

Have a Canva design, a Pinterest screenshot, or a photo that inspires you? Here's how to use it as the starting point for your invitation instead of a template.

Sometimes you already know what you want β€” you just don't know how to describe it. Maybe you saved a Canva design that was close, a Pinterest screenshot with the exact mood, or a photo of a friend's invitation you loved.

Instead of trying to translate that into text, you can start from the image itself.

What a Reference Photo Does

A reference photo gives the design a visual starting point rather than a blank canvas. Ainviter reads the layout, color palette, typography, and overall mood from your image, then generates an invitation that matches β€” with your event details and RSVP tracking built in.

This works especially well for:

  • Canva designs β€” you found something close but want to make it yours
  • Pinterest or Instagram screenshots β€” you saved the vibe, not the invitation
  • Photos of physical invitations β€” a friend's design, a card you received, a print ad
  • Your own brand assets β€” a logo, a color scheme, an existing design language

The point isn't to copy the image. It's to use it as the seed for a design that fits your event.

How It Works

1. Upload your reference. Drop in the image β€” a Canva export, a screenshot, a photo, or any visual that captures what you're going for.

2. Describe the changes. If the reference is close but not right, tell Ainviter what to adjust: "Same layout, but softer colors and more whitespace," or "Keep the floral border, make it a birthday instead of a baby shower."

3. Add your event details. Fill in the name, date, time, location, RSVP deadline, and any notes guests need.

4. Share and track. Send the invitation by link, text, or email. Guests view and RSVP from any device β€” no account required.

When to Use a Reference vs. Describing from Scratch

Use a reference when:

  • You already have a design that's 80% right
  • You're better at showing than describing
  • You want to match an existing brand, theme, or style guide

Describe from scratch when:

  • You have a clear idea in your head but no image
  • You're starting from zero and want to explore
  • You want something completely original rather than adapted

Both paths lead to a custom invitation. The difference is just where you start.

Start With What You Have

You don't need to know design terms or browse through hundreds of templates. If you have an image that captures the mood β€” a Canva design, a screenshot, a photo β€” that's enough.

Upload it, describe the tweaks, and get an invitation built around your reference instead of a template.
